Frequently Asked Questions

Misconceptions and myths surrounding hypnosis are very common, with many associating it solely with stage hypnotherapy. However, clinical hypnosis involves inducing trance to move you into a state of very focused attention, reduced awareness of what is going on around you and heightened sensitivity to suggestions.

When seeking hypnotherapy from a therapist registered with the Association of Solution Focused Hypnotherapists (AfSFH) you can be confident that you are working with a competent professional who is dedicated to your well-being and who will fully support you on your journey to a brighter future.

To help you to make an informed decision, I have provided some frequently asked questions below that often arise before clients engage in hypnotherapy.

If there is anything else you would like to know, please do contact me and I will be happy to answer your questions.

What is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic approach that combines Solution focused brief therapy, elements of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) with hypnotic trance.

The approach provides an effective and practical means of tackling negative thinking and emotions and unhealthy behaviours that that may be preventing you from living the life you desire.

The concept of Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is centred around the belief that we all possess the internal resources to help us identify solutions and achieve positive changes in our lives. Rather than fixating on the issue at hand, the focus is on harnessing our personal strengths to reach our goals.

Through this approach, individuals are empowered to make small meaningful changes and ultimately achieve their aims.

How is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy different from Other Hypnotherapy Approaches?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy stands out from other forms of hypnotherapy due to its unique approach. By integrating elements of Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and leveraging an understanding of brain function, this method utilizes trance to achieve positive outcomes.

What sets Solution Focused Hypnotherapy apart is its focus on the present and future, rather than delving into the past. This forward-thinking approach empowers individuals to create goals and envision a path towards a more fulfilling life.

What can I expect during an Initial Consultation with Cherry on Top?

  • Following our first communication together via email or phone call, there is a small amount of paperwork that is necessary for me to carry out your initial consultation. This involves the completion or signing of a consent form and acceptance of my terms and conditions of therapy. I will also share a copy of my privacy notice with you which informs you how your data will be handled and protected. If we are meeting face to face I will email these to you prior to your appointment to review.

  • In the consultation we will discuss the issues you are facing and what you would like to achieve from therapy, including your goals and aspirations for the future. This could include a wide range of concerns, such as reducing stress, boosting confidence, managing phobias, or changing behaviours like improving sleep or eating habits.

  • I will gather some other relevant information, such as your contact details, a brief medical history, and any other details that you feel may help me to understand how to best assist you.

  • It is important to talk about your brain - how it works, how emotions impact our behaviour, and how hypnotherapy brings about positive change. This discussion will also cover what trance is, how it is a very natural state, and what to expect during subsequent sessions.

  • Taking account all the information, I will then estimate the number of sessions that may be needed based on your individual circumstances and therapy goals, however, please be aware that there is no one size fits all solution.

  • I will provide you with a relaxation recording for you to use between sessions to enhance your relaxation practice and reinforce what we have covered in the session.

The Initial Consultation is an opportunity for me and you to get to know each other better, develop a trusting relationship, understand your reasons for seeking therapy and discuss how we will know when you achieved your desired goals. It also provides an opportunity in a safe space for you to ask questions so you feel comfortable and informed as we move forward together.

Initial consultations usually lasts around 60 minutes and is entirely free with no obligation to commence therapy if you feel it is not the right approach for your needs.

What can I expect in subsequent Solution Focused Hypnotherapy Sessions?

In subsequent sessions we follow a structured format where I will begin by inquiring about your week or the time since your last session. This allows for a conversation about any positive developments and any changes you may have observed in your life that align with your goals.

Depending on your response I will relate your experiences and behaviours back to the workings of the brain that we covered in your initial consultation. I will use solution-focused questions and techniques to help you refine your aims for personal growth.

Depending on your needs, elements of Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) may also be incorporated.

Following this discussion, you will be guided to relax in a chair or on a couch to gently induce a relaxed state. This trance-like state allows your mind to focus on my words, absorb, and reflect on the session's topics.

At the end of the session we will reflect on how the session went and I will provide any instructions for the following weeks session.

What issues do people often seek hypnotherapy for?

Hypnotherapy is a proven and effective therapeutic option for a variety of issues including:

  • Addictions
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Depression
  • Chronic pain
  • Chronic health conditions
  • Fears and phobias
  • Physical conditions such as IBS
  • Panic attacks
  • Poor sleep
  • Lack of confidence
  • Performance anxiety
  • Self-esteem issues
  • Trauma and complex trauma

However, it is important to understand that hypnotherapy is considered a complementary therapy and may not be suitable for individuals with:

  • Psychosis (such as schizophrenia)
  • Psychiatric disorders

It is highly recommended to consult with a qualified healthcare professional to determine the best course of treatment for these conditions.

What if I'm under a doctor's care or taking medication?

If you have any concerns regarding the potential impact of hypnosis on an existing medical condition, it is advisable to consult your General Practitioner or Consultant.

A hypnotherapist will never recommend altering medication without the explicit approval of your GP or Consultant.

Many medical professionals view hypnosis as a valuable complement to conventional medical interventions.

How long does therapy generally take?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is known for its efficiency, typically requiring between 8 to 12 sessions for optimal results, although individual circumstances may vary.

It is important to note that the exact number of sessions cannot be pre-determined, as this approach may hinder progress. Ultimately, the decision to conclude therapy should be guided by your own sense of readiness and progress.

Can I have hypnotherapy       online?

The choice is yours - I offer both online and face to face options.

Online sessions are conducted via video calls (usually via zoom or Microsoft Teams) as an alternative to in person sessions.

Many have a preference for online hypnotherapy as it offers a range of advantages, including the convenience of eliminating the necessity to travel. You can also engage in your sessions from the convenience of your own home, fostering a sense of relaxation and familiarity.

Is hypnotherapy bound by confidentiality?

Yes, all therapists are bound by strict confidentiality guidelines that prohibit them from discussing your information with others. However, in cases where there is a concern for potential harm to yourself or others, therapists are obligated to breach confidentiality.

It is also common practice for hypnotherapists to consult with a Supervisor regarding cases, while maintaining anonymity to protect client privacy.

What are the risks?

Rest assured, there are no significant risks involved in the therapeutic process. The only potential obstacle to achieving the desired therapeutic goal is when the client experiences resistance to change.

This resistance may indicate that the client is not fully prepared to address certain aspects of their issues.

Will I still be in control of myself during hypnosis?

This is a common concern for many who are considering hypnosis to wonder if they will lose control once in the trance state. Rest assured, undergoing hypnosis does not result in a loss of control.

While in a hypnotic trance, you remain fully conscious and in command of your actions. Your conscious mind may be deeply relaxed, but you retain the ability to make decisions.

It is important to note that no one can exert control over you during hypnotherapy without your consent. In fact, being in a hypnotic state often enhances self-awareness and focus on personal experiences. Throughout the session, you will possess all your mental faculties and will not be under any external influence.

Hypnosis does not render you susceptible to manipulation or coercion; you will only engage in behaviours that align with your values and beliefs.

Can I be hypnotised without my consent?

Hypnosis is a therapeutic technique that requires your consent to induce a state of deep relaxation. Without your willingness to participate, it is not possible for me to guide you into a hypnotic state.

The process of achieving this state involves gradual relaxation of both the body and mind, allowing for the necessary level of relaxation required for hypnosis.

It is important to note that individuals have the right to terminate a hypnosis session at any point if they are not comfortable or do not wish to proceed. Unlike stage hypnotists who may use rapid induction techniques, hypnotherapists use a gradual and gentle approach to relaxation in order to ensure a safe and therapeutic experience.

What happens if I can't come out of trance?

During hypnosis, you are not unconscious. Instead, you enter a state of deep relaxation while remaining fully conscious. You have the ability to exit this state whenever you choose or when directed by the hypnotherapist.

In some cases, you may find the relaxed state so enjoyable that you may not wish to return to full awareness immediately. Should this occur, it may take a few moments to transition back to your normal state, solely because of your desire to prolong the relaxation.

It is important to note that you are always in the driving seat, even when deeply hypnotized.
